Carolina Bastholm Dehn Fabiani (b. 2000, Milan) is an Italian-Danish visual artist working primarily with sculpture, ceramics, drawing and painting. Having lived between Italy, Switzerland and Denmark, she graduated with a BA in Sculpture from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan in 2024 and currently lives and works in Denmark.

Fabiani’s practice is driven by a sustained curiosity towards materials and their capacity for transformation. Drawing from organic matter, bodily forms and processes of growth and decay, she develops sculptures and images that move between the recognisable and the unfamiliar. Rather than reproducing their sources directly, she allows forms to become distorted, fragmented or ambiguous, often acquiring an uncanny or grotesque presence.

Material and sensory qualities play a central role in this process. Fabiani currently works predominantly with ceramics and felted animal fur, alongside drawing and an expanding engagement with painting. Previous works have incorporated human hair, soap, paper and other materials whose physical properties carry traces of their origin and transformation. Texture, surface, weight and tactility are not simply formal qualities, but ways through which the works establish a bodily relationship with the viewer.

Across these different media, forms often appear caught between states: organic and artificial, delicate and abject, familiar and otherworldly. Fabiani is particularly interested in this instability and in the moment when recognition begins to falter. Through the grotesque and the uncanny, bodily and natural references become difficult to categorise, allowing attraction, discomfort and curiosity to coexist.

Her practice approaches transformation not as a fixed subject, but as a working condition: materials change, forms resist resolution, and familiar references slip into something less certain. Through this ambiguity, Fabiani explores how sensory experience can precede interpretation, creating encounters that are felt before they are fully understood.
