Carolina Bastholm Dehn Fabiani (b. 2000, Milan) is an Italian-Danish cross-media artist working across sculpture, drawing, installation, and experimental material research. Having lived between Italy, Switzerland, and Denmark, her practice has developed within diverse cultural and educational contexts. After completing two preparatory art programs in Denmark, she graduated with a BA in Sculpture from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan in 2024. She currently lives and works in Denmark.
Carolina’s artistic practice centres on materials that retain traces of life - odour, texture and residue - resisting processes of sanitisation and control within an increasingly immaterial, technologised world. Working with substances marked by fragility and transformation, she approaches matter as both medium and subject. Form and meaning emerge through process, resistance and the inherent behaviour of materials, rather than through imposed control.
Drawn to the marginal and the ambiguous, she works with a wide range of materials and techniques, including felting human hair, soiled animal fur, soap-making, ceramics, and layered paper. Her work inhabits the tension between delicacy and abrasion, purity and contamination, generating forms that appear restrained or innocent yet contain latent contradictions. Traces of origin and intimacy remain exposed, while the surfaces resist refinement and resolution, holding an unsettled, almost animate quality.
Through this sustained attention to materiality, Carolina explores how familiar bodily substances and forms slip into states of uncanniness — where recognition falters and meaning destabilises. Oscillating between care and repulsion, her work probes the fragile threshold where intimacy becomes ambiguous, reflecting on how vulnerability, shame, and uncertainty are negotiated both individually and collectively.
